About

ENVIROMENTAL PROTECTION OF UFUFUMA/JENDELE (EPUJE) is dedicated to the conservation of the Ufufuma Forest and its native villagers in Zanzibar, TZ.

This Ufufuma Forest conservation & tourism project is an NGO based in the village of Jendele.  It is directed by Mr. Mustafa Makame, a village elder who works for the Zanzibar government. He has set up the Project to preserve the habitat of precious native forest and to help bring in resources to one of the poorest communities on the island.

Due to lack of economic opportunities, attempts at farming have resulted in mass deforestation that is encroaching upon Ufufuma forest.  Ufufuma is not only a robust explosion of indigenous vegetation but is also a unique spiritual centre, offering local people the chance to come and be healed, treated and aided by the ancient souls channeled through the practices of witch doctors.  Mustafa and his guides will take you on a journey into the Ufufuma forest: stop to meet traditional doctors, learn about natural remedies and cultural practices used to treat ailments and disease, see wild flora & fauna, and visit the three fabled Spirit Caves where healing takes place.

Coming to Ufufuma is a truly a rare & special, magical experience.  We hope you will venture into the woods to see the last of the true witch doctors, thereby helping the village and forest at the same time.
